Bandwidth Bandito A very underrated musician, Stoney has a great range of songs on this album. Witty and catchy songs that sound like they should be on radio on high rotation, yet he does not get that level of exposure; and I scratch my head as to why this is so. A great treasure that has been hidden. Favorite track: Ghost.

Jailbird 04:32
Jailbird, Mark Stoney Album The Scene and the Unseen Do you dream like a baby Jailbird? (sitting in a cage) Do you only know your own world? Do you wonder at your wings, do you wonder at your wings? Can you follow where the wind blows In these everlasting limbos that never give you up But never give enough She shakes the cage, she shakes the cage (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown) She dares the jaded heart to hope again (she bends back the bars and calls me home) She breaks the chains, she breaks the chains (I'm overcome, I"m overthrown) She calls the faded dream to wake, and stirred up the hurricanes of change She's woken a dream from slumber She's broken the spell I'm under I laid a loyal kiss upon the hand of risk. But nothing will feed the hunger and so The hunted becomes the hunter The bird upon the wire, with the belly full of fire She shakes the cage, she shakes the cage (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown) She dares the jaded heart to hope again (she bends back the bars and calls me home) She breaks the chains, she breaks the chains (I'm overcome, I"m overthrown) She calls the faded dream to wake, and stirred up the hurricanes of change Well I bit the hand that fed me and it closed into a fist But this damn job was paying peanuts, I was feeling like a monkey in a zoo, a monkey in a zoo. The safety of monotony had put the blinkers on, the bait of mediocrity and hook, line, sinker I'd been caught, (baby we'd been caught) She shakes the cage, she shakes the cage (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown) She dares the jaded heart to hope again (She bends back the bars and calls me home) She breaks the chains, she breaks the chains (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown) She calls the fading dream to wake and stirred up the hurricanes of change ( of change) Hope, flow, Hope, flow

I only touched your love As the tips of my fingers tried to clutch your love I'm sick of this soap in a bathtub love I need something to hold (ah ah) I feel deluded As once again I am eluded And everything is left unconcluded I need something to hold And we know you're there Somewhere in these murky waters If you just showed us where You'd bring to life all that you taught us Do you just sit and stare? I know that you're longing to be found Isn't that what you want? I adore your love But it's snakes and ladders looking for your love Fakes and blaggers claim to be your love I don't want the fools gold (ah ah) But I'm in in danger I'm hungry, angry, lonely and a stranger I'm livin la vida loca lone ranger I need something to hold And we know you're there Somewhere in these murky waters If you just showed us where You'd bring to life all that you taught us Do you just sit and stare? I know that you're longing to be found Isn't that what you want? Isn't that what you want?

Until You Leave White trim, big bling, bass bin Pounding thru suburban hell All the curtains twitch (Nothing ever seems to change round here) Pub shut, half cut, kebab hut Heaving with a clientele of legless wit (Everything is still the same round here) And it's always good seeing old friends But I don't miss this place one bit Chorus: (Oohs) There's nothing to do You either get pissed up or you move It's hard to believe But you don't see it till you leave Until you leave Same slang, kid gangs still hang out Around the late night Spar, like we used to do (Nothing ever seems to change round here) School night, fistfight, Diamond White trying out the fake ID, sweating in the queue (Everyone wants to escape round here) And everything runs like clockwork and all hangs out when You stop work Repeat Chorus: (Oohs) There's nothing to do You either get pissed up or you move It's hard to believe But you don't see it till you leave Until you leave Until you leave Until you leave

There was me with my pride Standing our ground, standing our ground. We stood and yelled at the tide To turn around, to turn around. Well that day would outlive Our best laid plans, our best laid plans Something just had to give And my castle gave itself back to the sand CH1 I was my own and everyone's fool, Mutton dressed up as lamb But now the emperor's clothes have been torn I can see what I am. So hold my hat for a while So I feel the rain, so I feel the rain Take an inch from your mile And start again, and start again. Put a little light in my soul You shine I'll glow, you shine I'll glow. See I'm hollow & cold So let me be the lantern that you hold. CH2 And If I take myself seriously Then I just get confused They say those who can laugh at themselves Will never cease to be amused. OUTRO I wanna find you I wanna find you (Fall in love again) I wanna find you again I wanna find you I wanna find you (The stillness of content) I wanna find you again

I'm a believer Spreading the word like a fever Love is alive (His hand holds the stars) Took my dry bones opened your heart and made it my home Love is alive (His hand holds the stars) Set me on fire and the shadow vanishes My heart is all b-b-bouncing off the walls lift me out the mire bring sweet melody and I will have it pumping down the halls Set me on fire, fire, fire Now it's your turn let me set you alight let your flame burn love is alive (His hand holds the stars) Let your soul sing open your eyes let the light in love is alive (His hand holds the stars) Set me on fire and the shadow vanishes My heart is all b-b-bouncing off the walls lift me out the mire bring sweet melody and I will have it pumping down the halls Set me on fire, fire, fire Redeemed you stand a friend you are to he whose mighty hand holds the stars his hand holds the stars Set me on fire set me on fire

The night passed. Sorrow drowned in my whiskey glass As I tried to forget. The dawn came. The light barged in to awake my shame. with a newborn regret. I need a cigarette. Take a shower Wash it all off Got to get myself together cos this just cannot happen anymore I gotta stop I gotta clean up I keep shooting my big mouth off I cant let this happen anymore. I'm toxic Knock a coffee back for a caffeine kick Can't open my eyes. My hands twitch The nicotine patch don't scratch the itch But I'll make it this time Gotta make it this time Take a shower Wash it all off Got to get myself together cos this just cannot happen anymore I gotta stop I gotta clean up I keep shooting my big mouth off I just cant let this happen anymore. I gotta find another way to escape I keep putting my foot in my mouth like a two- bit ape I gotta find a better way to flick the switch Than running round town like a clown turned lunatic. Chorus Take a shower Wash it all off Got to get myself together cos this just cannot happen anymore I gotta stop I gotta clean up I keep shooting my big mouth off I have been here many times before And I have said this many times before

Ghost 03:57
Looking back through The window in the door that now has closed, The looking glass that loss has tinted rose, At the secrets of the path we never chose. We lose ourselves there As we fall into the arms of the unseen, Of all that never was but should have been, Beyond the day that woke us from the dream. And it's a little late to speculate on what we could have done. It's a little late to overstate the obvious. We considered every move we made, We did what we thought best So release the fist of dirt into the grave, And lay the ghost to rest Let it go with The hurt of all the promises unkept, The pride behind apologies unsaid, And the tragedy of hope they left for dead. Because it's as fruitless As the tears in the sour milk we spilt On the ruins of the tower that we built And the silence and the loneliness of guilt. And it's a little late to speculate on what you could have done And so easy now to overstate the obvious. We considered every move we made We did what we thought best. So throw down your fist of dirt into the grave And lay the ghost to rest. This one's over No phoenix from these ashes will arise So let the tears upon the lashes of your eyes Fall to the desert ground and bring new life. Walk away now I'm not saying that we can or should forget Just don't cloud your every sunrise with regret The curtain hasn't fallen on us yet The curtain hasn't fallen on us yet The curtain hasn't fallen on us yet

Bring your cup, fill it up til it overflows Bring your cup, fill it up til it overflows Bring your cup, fill it up til it overflows Baby keep it coming until you are fit to burst. Pretty little hippy, yeah come, come feel the love take all that your heart can hold there's more than enough oh yeah. The light inside, come alive let it take you higher The light inside, come alive let it set you on fire The light inside, come alive let it take you higher Baby keep it coming until you are fit to burst Hear me yeah, Bohemia come, come feel the love take all that your hearts can hold there's more than enough Tho their body been broken they know no despair let his soul stand ten feet tall with a fist in the air

Jake 04:23
When you saw the red mist, you were horny and pissed No one tells you when you ought to go home So you start locking horns, he's a stag to your fawn Why the hell can't you leave it alone? Well your arse hit the floor, still you stand up for more There's no mercy for your stubborn pride And your girl starts to plead, as your face starts to bleed But with a drunken arm you flung her aside Chorus (oh oh) Jake, Jake you know we love you (oh oh oh) I know you're mad about the liberties he took (oh oh oh)Make no mistake he'll crush you (oh oh oh) Can't you see just how ridiculous you look V2 Well you wont give it up Cos you don't give a **** Seems that some people just never learn Gave your shoulders a shrug, Shouted danger's my drug And like a dog to his puke, you return Well this time was the last His fist was too fast His ring the last thing that you saw And your point laid to waste As your bid to save face Left you eating your lunch through a straw Chorus Mid 8 Your brow frowns and your knuckles drag You mouth drools and your belly sags Downtown kicking up a stink The Drinking man is the missing link Your brow frowns and your knuckles drag Your eyes gaze out of two black bags Around town kicking up a stink The Drinking man.......... Ahh

Now's a good time to pluck your head from the sand, Zion's misfit freaks are marching in to the land You put a song in our heart, we put our hearts in your hands As one we become, so as one we will stand We're not defined by the past, but reminded by scars How our hearts are refined 'til they shine like the stars No need to talk like a wolf when we walk in the dark The revolution will come when we come as we are I breathe the melody in, now it runs in my blood I laid my song to your beat, and it fits like a glove Put my feet on the ground, keep my head up above Make me shrewd as a snake, but as pure as a dove I see you working subversively, reversing the curse So the first are the last and the last are the first Now we can laugh at the impossible and know it'll work And grab the arse of a slim chance, like an adversity pervert And our dreams was reborn, when we'd sworn it'd died When our hope had all withered, our rivers had dried Then you woke us with a kiss that cleared the mist from our eyes And said now's a good time to be alive Now rise up, we're moving in with our eyes closed shut And no more pussyfooting around, we've come to shout the walls down, yeah I said now rise up, we're moving in with our eyes closed shut No more pussyfooting around, we've come to shout the walls down And now rise up, we've come to shout the walls down, yeah I said now rise up, we've come to shout the walls down, yeah I said now rise up, we've come to shout the walls down, yeah I'm gonna dance with my tribe until the morning light comes Until the morning light comes, yeah I'm gonna dance with my tribe until the morning light comes Till the morning light comes, yeah Rehearsing our verses, diversity bursting, Converting our hearses and birthing a circus Adverse to the thirst of the mercenary's purses We're fervently serving the worthiest purpose You are I'm gonna dance with my tribe (You are) until the morning light comes Till the morning light comes, yeah (You are, you are) I'm gonna dance with my tribe (You are) until the morning light comes Till the morning light comes, yeah

One of you 04:31
I got all the right credentials still I don't belong I do all the right things maybe I just do 'em wrong Advances spurned their backs are turned against us. Advances spurned their backs are turned against us. I can't pretend I know what to do I never have been or will be one of you dry conversation, no common ground I see their lips move, but I don't hear a sound. we waste our smiles. Another awkward introduction, I don't know what to say, I'm a walking interruption I should go away. Advances spurned their backs are turned against us I can't pretend I know what to do I never have been or will be one of you dry conversation, no common ground I see their lips move, but I don't hear a sound. we waste our smiles. Bridge: (ft. Hannah Frances!) Don't tell it to the doctor Don't tell it to the nurse Just tell it to my baby He's the one that makes it hurt I can't pretend I know what to do I never have been or will be one of you dry conversation, no common ground I see their lips move, but I don't hear a sound. we waste our smiles.

Underdog 06:01
I'm good as dead, They're hurricanes of brawn and brains And its dog eat dog It's clear to see That the odds don't look all that good for me. Someone said It's not what you know, it's who you know You cannot predict these things. It's stones and slings, The giant falls and the kid's the king. Well all that I've got Is just a prayer to sell, My last penny dropped Into the wishing well I've nothing to lose, No one sees me - I'm a ghost within the fog, God bless the underdog V2 Oh all expect . The proud are bold The crowd are sold Oh they know its crunch time soon My punch line's due But if the tables turn then the jokes on you The lights all fade The bets are laid My bed is made No one ever hears my voice I'm background noise But mountains move when the meek rejoice Well all that I've got Is just a prayer to sell, My last penny dropped Into the wishing well I've nothing to lose, No one sees me - I'm a ghost within the fog, God bless the underdog V2 Oh all expect . The proud are bold The crowd are sold Oh they know its crunch time soon My punch line's due But if the tables turn then the jokes on you And I know my chances . I'm not trying to fool myself And I know I need to You know that I need nothing else Chorus Outro You are all that I've got But you are all that I've... Yeah you are all that I've got But you are all that I need

about

So here is the full album that almost made me famous! It’s widely thought of as my debut, although this isn’t strictly true if you include 2001’s Amber.
This record had a long gestation period (4 years of ups and downs, band reshuffles, near misses with major label success etc) and I think that’s reflected in the multitudes of ideas crammed into many of the tracks. It’s perhaps a little overdeveloped in places, but it is what it is - a widescreen musical snapshot of a long, long journey which is too long to describe in detail here!

(This is where I slip into a black polo necked sweater, thick rimmed specs and start stroking my chin...)

The title holds a few different meanings to me, but in essence the “Scene” part touches on the tangible images in the record – where I write about my surroundings and my observations of them. “The Unseen” is more a representation of the hidden things within & behind it – stuff like dreams, hopes, faith, emotions etc. You could also describe the Scene as the journey and the Unseen the destination.
Some have suggested that it also references the Sheffield music scene which was at the time enjoying a national revival around us thanks to a handful of NME championed spiky gritty observational indie bands, led in no small part by the Arctic Monkeys. That might also be partly true, but I can’t totally remember.
The fact that the whole title is a dreadful pun is a reminder to not take any of the above (or me) too seriously.
.
It's largely a "bedroom recording" tho some of the tracks were later polished up with the help of band members, friends and a local studio. It’s a diverse collection of songs, and while this eclecticism hopefully makes for an interesting listen, it likely made it a nightmare to market! As a result, it may always be filed under “critically acclaimed, yet commercially challenged!” I think I can live with that.

It was originally released on limited run CD & download in July 2006 on TooNice records, then later re-released nationwide on my own Sonicroar label in Nov 2007.
It picked up a couple of iTunes "Singles of the week" and some other ego massaging accolades along the way. While I’ve no doubt there’s one or two scathing reviews out there, overall it was pretty warmly received and tracks from the record even pop up in TV shows & Hollywood films occasionally, which is always nice.

Feel free to click on the song title for more in depth ramblings.

Some Critic Snippits:

"..One moment the gifted lone operator affects the kind of trenchant rock-riff panache associated with the younger Bowie, the next he's rattling off urban nightlife images with the droll elegance of The Kinks...
The Independent 4/5

"... A Gem of a debut, packed with invention..”
NME 8/10

"......The Scene & The Unseen is lyrically sharp but defies classification as Stoney runs the gamut of the best pop over the past 40 years. Bits of Bowie, Syd Barrett, Ray Davies, Beck, even ELO float by and every song is a great new experience….”
Sunday Express 4/5

“…, The echoes in his music of the Small Faces, solo McCartney and Hunky Dory Bowie share space with an up-to-date musical eccentricity and elasticity that calls to mind Beck, Super Furry Animals and Ed Harcourt. In other words, weird enough to be hip, commercial enough to be huge....”
