about
This little ditty was featured in BBC's Eastenders! It played on the radio in the Arches while Gary & Minty argued. One of the Stoney familys proudest moments.
It was also featured on the Arctic Monkey's iTunes celebrity playlist, where it was one of a few recommended tracks picked out by Sir Alex Turner.
The back Story:
I grew up in a town called Caterham on the South London/Surrey border. During my childhood, it was a strange but interesting place, home to a large mental asylum, an army barracks, aimless locals in pubs and a spattering of semi-detached commuter housing.
There was a crossroads in the town that connected the entrances to the Asylum, the pub, the Barracks and the Church of which my Dad was pastor at the time. Many a man at some point in his life stood between those four institutions trying to decide which one he belonged in. I was no exception
During my teens, the face of the town changed and the local asylum & barracks were closed down to make way for soulless suburban commuter housing. The place lost a lot of it's character and the kids got bored. We'd do the usual small town activities like hanging round in the streets & parks experimenting with unusual substances and finding ever inventive and wreckless ways to entertain ourselves.
As a young teenager I had a job before & after school working at the local market selling pet food & cheap ladies lingerie. Later on I worked at the local pawnbrokers and fell into the regular daily routine of work/pub/fight/kebab shop/sleep.
One night like every other in the pub, surrounded by empty pint glasses, a local man randomly came and sat down next to me and said in slurred tones: "In Caterham, you have two options.... Get pissed, or get out."
The next week I packed up my belongings and left. I ended up in Sheffield for some reason.
Fast forward a couple of years and all my musical buddies in Sheffield were becoming famous for their spiky observational social commentary & kitchen sink drama. It became infectious, but as an immigrant in the Steel city, all I could do was draw on my own experiences inspired by my visits back to my native Caterham to visit family & friends.
"Until you leave" was released as a double A-Side single on vinyl, CD and Download along with "Holds The Stars" in December 06 through TooNice records.
lyrics
Until You Leave
White trim, big bling, bass bin
Pounding thru suburban hell
All the curtains twitch
(Nothing ever seems to change round here)
Pub shut, half cut, kebab hut
Heaving with a clientele of legless wit
(Everything is still the same round here)
And it's always good seeing old friends
But I don't miss this place one bit
Chorus:
(Oohs)
There's nothing to do
You either get pissed up or you move
It's hard to believe
But you don't see it till you leave
Until you leave
Same slang, kid gangs still hang out
Around the late night Spar, like we used to do
(Nothing ever seems to change round here)
School night, fistfight, Diamond White trying out the fake ID, sweating in the queue
(Everyone wants to escape round here)
And everything runs like clockwork and all hangs out when You stop work
Repeat Chorus:
(Oohs)
There's nothing to do
You either get pissed up or you move
It's hard to believe
But you don't see it till you leave
Until you leave
Until you leave
Until you leave
