about
HOMM!!! Don't ask - I can't remember.
The opening track of The Scene & The Unseen , Jailbird was one of the first tracks I wrote for the record and went through many reincarnations and mutations over about 3 years before it arrived at this version.
It's basically a song about something deep and meaningful, but I forget what exactly- Somethin about shakin a cage and peanuts and monkeys.
The record has more layers & ideas crammed into it than you can shake a stick at. I'd just made the transition to digital recording and I guess felt compelled to take advantage of the limitless number of overdubs available to me. A final last minute revamp mix by my wonderful friend & live engineer Phil Bulleyment sealed the version which you hear today.
It was eventually released as a single on my Sonicroar label in November 2007, along with a spiffingly gay Europop remix by Camp America as one of the 3 B-Sides and Artwork by the Wonderful Phil Gribbon aka DesignByGecko.
A fine director called Mike Baldwin also made a video for it. You can see that here: www.vimeo.com/377274
He's a proper director n everything, and usually does dead expensive videos for famous people, but agreed to do it for £226 because it's all I had and he's a lovely man.
It was actually one of 3 videos made for the song, but I'll be damned if I know where the others are.
lyrics
Jailbird, Mark Stoney
Album The Scene and the Unseen
Do you dream like a baby Jailbird? (sitting in a cage)
Do you only know your own world?
Do you wonder at your wings, do you wonder at your wings?
Can you follow where the wind blows
In these everlasting limbos that never give you up
But never give enough
She shakes the cage, she shakes the cage (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown)
She dares the jaded heart to hope again (she bends back the bars
and calls me home)
She breaks the chains, she breaks the chains (I'm overcome, I"m overthrown)
She calls the faded dream to wake, and stirred up the hurricanes of change
She's woken a dream from slumber
She's broken the spell I'm under
I laid a loyal kiss upon the hand of risk.
But nothing will feed the hunger and so
The hunted becomes the hunter
The bird upon the wire, with the belly full of fire
She shakes the cage, she shakes the cage (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown)
She dares the jaded heart to hope again (she bends back the bars
and calls me home)
She breaks the chains, she breaks the chains (I'm overcome, I"m overthrown)
She calls the faded dream to wake, and stirred up the hurricanes of change
Well I bit the hand that fed me and it closed into a fist
But this damn job was paying peanuts, I was feeling like a monkey
in a zoo, a monkey in a zoo.
The safety of monotony had put the blinkers on, the bait of mediocrity and hook, line, sinker I'd been caught, (baby we'd been caught)
She shakes the cage, she shakes the cage (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown)
She dares the jaded heart to hope again (She bends back the bars
and calls me home)
She breaks the chains, she breaks the chains (I'm overcome, I'm overthrown)
She calls the fading dream to wake and stirred up the hurricanes of change
( of change)
Hope, flow, Hope, flow
